MAKING OF ONE OUR SHEPHERD HUTS My husband who you may often meet when visiting us for chickens, makes beautiful Shepherd Huts and thought it would be interesting to see one being made from start to finish! I will update this page as it progresses.
November 2010 The original wheels and turntable arrive - Shaun's father Mick spent hours removing them from the chassis in the freezing cold.
![]() The side panels are cut and assembled in the workshop, with the window openings cut in position. Everything now has to move up to the barns where we can work under cover and out of the cold. Using the tractor we transport everything across the fields into the barn and promptly have to light the braziers as it is sooo cold! The tin arrives ready cut and curved for the roof. Have to handle the sheets with care as our hands stick to them in the cold.
The floor joists are cut and assembled. Side panels are lifted onto the base.
![]() Insulation is fitted within all the panels and roof. This is one of the most important parts, we use really high quality 'Super Quilt' blanket insulation to make sure the huts can be used all year round, making sure they are warm in the winter & cool in the summer. The tin roof is also lined with a breathable membrane before being lined with blanket insulation.
![]() ![]() DECEMBER 2010 Electrics are started, James the electrician is wiring sockets, lighting and underfloor heating - this will be a cozy hut!
Collect the pre-cut steel for the chassis and Adam starts work on welding. We are re-using as many of the original parts as possible but some do need replacing.
DECEMBER 18TH 2010 Chassis is coming on fast. Adam has done a fantastic job of welding a new chassis utilising the original wheels, turntable and axles. It will certainly be VERY strong! The difficult part came when it had to be turned over. It was assembled and welded upside down and had to be turned - luckily Shaun and Adam had eaten their porridge this morning and managed to flip it, but it was very heavy. James the Electrician has first fixed the 240 volt and 12 volt. We are now ready to fit the underfloor heating and the ceiling. The stove has arrived and looks fantastic. It is a multi-fuel stove and incorporates an oven, so not only can you be nice and cozy but can have a tasty casserole and jacket potato.
DECEMBER 19TH 2010 More snow and its freezing cold - minus 9! It's moving day for the hut - we have to transfer the Shepherds Hut onto the chassis and then move it into the next barn. To start the day the tractors won't start due to the low temperature. The chassis slides under the Shepherds Hut and Billy tows it outside for us - a tense moment as there is only an inch or two clearance on the barn roof. Finally we get the tractors to run and Tom manages to tow it into the new barn. We have more space in this barn so are ready for stage 2 this week!
JANUARY 2011 Vapour membrane is fitted followed by outer tin. Underfloor heating and flooring are laid.
Shaun starts painting inside and fitting double bed with cupboards and drawers below (one of which holds toilet - all the mod cons!).
The hut is towed across the field and down to the workshops for the next stage.
22nd January 2011 Adam primed the chassis and has got the first coat of black on. Roof trimmings are fitted. The hut is christened - friends saying with us camped out in it overnight. Even with polythene covering the window openings and a temporary ply door the hut was a constant 18 degrees overnight with the underfloor heating ticking over. It was -4 outside! 30th January 2010 Woodburner, flue and chimney are fitted and we give it a trial run - with just a few lumps of coal or wood it can be closed up and keeps the hut hot all day. Cooked the most perfect pizza in the integrated oven.
Hand made windows are fitted and Pilkington K glass is installed. Shaun makes shutters and fits them, just need painting now.
4th February 2011 Shaun has made and fitted the beautiful solid oak door. It is a very substantial, traditional stable door with miniature shutters on the window. It looks like the next commission is for an office but with a balcony area off the back so will be a lot larger than this Shepherd Hut, and we also have plans requested for a Reiki treatment room.
18th February 2011 The hut is now virtually finished. Shaun has hand crafted and fitted internal skirting, a drop down solid oak table, oak steps and painted throughout.
August 2011 This hut was sold to a lovely couple who were using it as a guest bedroom and summer house. We have since widened our range and have had a number of new commissions including a Shooting hut, Reiki treatment room, a home office and a party room.
